GN Wasp Illustration

After photographing the VSCC event at Harewood Hillclimb, I looked back through my photos to find a shot that I wanted to create a poster with. I wanted striking colours, strong forms and excitement to come through in the shot that I’d create an illustration from.

The GN Wasp as photographed on the day at Harewood Hillclimb.

I chose Winston Teague’s beautiful (if that is the word) GN Wasp as the shot that I would work on. This very distinct 1920s race car has such character that I wanted to celebrate it by creating an artwork.

I chose to make the poster in Photoshop rather than Illustrator, as I find it much easier to draw in. A document size of A1 would be too taxing for my MacBook, so my desktop PC would have to do.

The GN Wasp poster with the background. This proved to be popular on twitter & Flickr, compared to the white version.

I initially created the poster to look as near to the shot as I could, but thought that the background distracted from the detail of the car too much. I instead chose to put the car level, and simply add to it with simple, appropriate typography, and the Foot Lambert logo.

The ‘final’ GN Wasp illustration poster, with simple typography and no background.

I’ve no idea what I’ll do with the illustration now, but have considered getting a framed print. I’d estimate that the poster took around 20 hours to complete, over the course of a week.

I do feel that photography can not only create artwork in it’s own right, but can be the basis for creating other pieces of art.

What do you think of my illustration? I’d love to hear your (constructive!) thoughts.
